• We study the causal effect of exposure to childhood immunization on schooling and later-life cognitive abilities in China.
• Chinese individuals with at least one childhood vaccination enjoy about one extra year of schooling.
• Early immunization causally relates to higher later-life numeracy, mental status, and episodic memory scores.
• A causal mediation analysis reveals that education marginally mediates the effect of immunization on cognitive abilities.
• Successful immunization campaigns might not only improve quality of life, but also decrease income inequality.
